Question by Chargers fan: What are some good stories to mention when speaking to a group of Muslim youth?
With about 2-3 minutes of speaking time, maybe just one story? It’s going to be at a picnic for the youth of our community, and we’re trying to encourage them to come to the Masjid more often, and we’re going to have weekly youth group meetings.

So, what kind of story from Islamic history would be interesting or motivational for youth to gain interest in being active?

I was once an enlisted man in the Air Force. I briefed rooms full of officers, most were wearing stars. I always felt that if they were the expert then they would be doing the briefing and I would be asking the questions.

Know your subject and it will all fall together. Public speaking is scary as heII but after a few times it gets easier. BTW, if it ever gets to a point that you feel no jitters at all, it is time to find another job or get someone to close the lid on your coffin. Seriously, those jitters or butterflies or what ever you chose to call them will keep you honest. They will tell you when you are not properly prepared and you will remember it when you prepare for your next speech.

While those things would be very embarrassing if they occurred, fortunately most of them never happen and never will.  Yet, even if they do, it’s helpful to plot in your mind a strategy that makes even the worst of situations turn out to be advantageous to you.

Sound difficult?  Not as much as you’d think.  Let me explain.

You see, no matter what happens, there’s a powerful way you can interpret things that can make you invincible when it comes to speaking.  This requires a bit of training and practice but you can master it in 30 days or less if you’re diligent. 

Ask yourself this question.  “How can I turn this situation around so that it it is beneficial to me?”

Let me give you an example.  Picture your audience disliking your speech so much they decide to get up and leave the room.  One way you could turn this around is to stop what you’re doing and ask those particular audience members for feedback.  Is there something about your topic, style, manner that was offensive?  Were those people simply in the wrong room?

Regardless of what they tell you, just the very fact that you stopped and dealt with the situation will build up your self esteem and score you points with your audience.  You’ll also gain the opportunity to learn how you’re affecting people and you can make any adjustments you need to.
