  Because people are willing to pay a lot of money to watch sports, whereas insurance companies are driven by profit to pay as little as possible.

  Because we have way more stupid and greedy people in the world than we do smart people. So naturally they need some form of entertainment. That’s where the greedy people come in by charging us outrageous prices to watch a bunch of grown men and women play games we all did (or many of us anyways) as children. And of course the stupid people pay it.

  Simply a matter of supply and demand. There is substantially more demand for these people because they have great influence, they provide entertainment which is a recognized popular good, and there is less supply of them than doctors or surgeons. The last point maybe false, but I’d assume so. Although I don’t condone the inequality in how people’s salary is made, celebrities make way too much in relation with other hard working people :(

  There’s lots of money in sports via media and other business apparatuses. T.V., Magazines, ticket sails, sports merchandise, etc. It’s a big business, therefor the sports leagues can afford the extra bucks to their players in order to ensure the best of the best players stay with them and are satisfied. Neurosurgeons (brain surgeons) make less money because their trade is not as sensationalized and publicly celebrated as sports are. There is less business involved and less mass media appeal. In short, anything that has to do with entertainment will surely make more money than anything else.

  What “should” be happening and what is “really” happening are two different things. The athlete participates in an activity that generates so much more money than medicine does. It is only natural that anyone participating would benefit more from such a thing too.

  The problem with your question is parallel to the question of why are diamonds more valuable than water when water is useful and diamonds are not. The reason is a combination of demand which is low cost for general viewers and for those whose demand is less flexible it is created by premium pricing for fan goods, pay per view and ticket costs. So you have the ability to discriminate on the basis of price and so sports get higher than normal net revenues. Access to supply is both restricted artificially AND suppliers can discriminate using prices.

  The second is supply of players. Very few players are needed due to the restrictions. There is an exact number of possible slots available. Competition drives the best players into those slots. At the bottom level of skill, say t-ball or little league, the impact of slight differences in skill and talent is small. At the top levels pretty small changes can be the difference between a win and a loss. Remember that sports is binary, you win or you lose. Most sports don’t permit ties. A tenth of a second advantage will not matter at all among a group of fifth graders, but at the global level a tenth of a second determines many races, and often a small fraction of that.

  There is a lot of money funneled into very few people.

  In what way do brain surgeons generate income for the country? Perhaps sports players have more marketing potential for a team/company which can provide income even from foreign countries? Hence the reason why they can be paid more…
