Question by Ernesto S: For Filipino members only: How can I improve my (public) English Speaking ability?
I want to improve my skills in speaking especially public speaking in English. Every time I was assigned to say something in public, I feel like I’m dying even though it was just simple sentences. Oftentimes, I escape my way through alibis. I know these are not healthy and I know my inability to speak in public hampers my chance to be promoted in my job. But I can express impressive thoughts in written form only.

My friends advice me to enroll in an English Speaking Improvement class. Is speaking class really beneficial? Any comment regarding Speechpower class or Nouveau Manila English Center (which of them has effective training program)?

i’m not fliipino but I think your english is actually really good and doesn’t need improvement

  The only cure for stage fright is to be on the stage as often as you can! Try speaking in small groups or in family gatherings. Build up your self confidence. You will commit mistakes along the way, so learn from it! In fact I learned it the harsh way. After speaking for an hour, the following day, I could not speak. I should have paced myself.

  I am not familiar with those programs. Just inquire from the center.

  I had a few courses in Public Speaking (English) back in college. Not that it was a major course or anything. In any case, as in any skill, improvement comes with lots of practice. Try speaking in english all the time, to everyone you talk to. You just have to get pretty comfortable with the language and get comfortable speaking it.
  Though written english (of w/c you seem to be quite good at already) entails different skills than public speaking, it seems what you may be after is improvement in the skill of public speaking. As to the english language, you already have a good command of it in written form (reading in english follows if you can write it well), then you just have to polish your public speaking skills in general – as opposed to just plain communication in english (or in whatever language it is).
