help! i have a major public speaking phobia =(?

Question by MMMolly: help! i have a major public speaking phobia =(?
Okay, so i’m a 17 year old girl and my absolute worst fear is public speaking. When I was younger like elementary school i could do it, but now I can’t. It’s been a problem I’ve been struggling for years now and I hate it so much. I’ve tried almost everything to make myself better; therapy, vitamins, relaxation techniques, and even hypnosis. NONE of these things have even helped a little. So far in my high school career I’ve gotten out of most presentations but next year I’m going to college and I know I’m not going to be able to get away with it there. The straw that broke the camels back was today. In my health class we had to do group presentations and I was terrified but I decided to try and do it. All I had to say was one line but as my time to speak approached I had a panic attack. I get them whenever I think about giving a presentation or actually giving one. I couldn’t breath, my heart was beating like crazy, I got really hot and dizzy, my whole body was trembling, and I felt like I was going to pass out. It was horrible.

I just looked at the teacher and said “I can’t do this” with tears in my eyes. I felt awful and embarrassed. Both my parents are psychologist, so they understand what I’m going through. I called my dad from school sobbing from my panic attack and convinced him to call my doctor, so I would hopefully get some type of pill that will help. But I need advice from anyone out there. What kind of drugs are there that help people like me? Anybody go through anything similar? I honestly cannot physically get up and speak in front of people. Also, please don’t say anything like imagine the audience in their underwear or practice in front of a mirror. those things do nothing. Thanks for any info and advice, it is greatly appreciated.

Answer by Chris
How about practice in front of a small group of good friends and family? Or take a shot before hand, it’ll help relax you.

Public Speaking. Please help!!!?

Question by elsie22: Public Speaking. Please help!!!?
I’m taking an effective speaking class for summer quarter, and in every class we have to get up and talk about something infront of the class. I get so nervous just waiting for my name to be called I can’t listen to anyone else, my hands sweat, and I feel like I’m going to pass out. Then, when I’m up there my voice shakes and I look down. Last class I finished, sat down in my seat, and my teacher goes ‘lets go back up there and try that again’. It was SOOO embarrassing. I do NOT know how to get over this.

Picturing people in their underwear doesn’t work for me, so no suggestions like that. Please help!

Answer by eri
Try staring over their heads, or at a light. But it sounds like you really need this course. I used to be horrible at public speaking; the night before I taught my first class I had a panic attack so bad I ended up in the ER where they thought I had a collapsed lung. Took months to figure out they were panic attacks. After that, I took every opportunity to speak in public – volunteered to teach other people’s classes, gave talks, etc – until I started to get over it. It took years, but now I’m at the point where I just feel a little nervous and talk a bit too fast. Practice makes perfect!

I’m sorry, but I can’t get really excited about your skills, though I suspect that they are considerable. You have hit-the-mark on a few entries (e.g., “consistently produced sales above the national average) but mostly you put in “motherhood and apple-pie” type comments and don’t provide enough objective data for a would-be employer to evaluate the experience. You need more “meat” – details on what the job demands were (e.g., in the VAlue Carpets position, you should tell how many people you supervised or the approximate value of the inventory managed and then describe some specific accomplishment(s) or some event/activity you are particularly proud of. In the telesales positions, tell what the “national average” figure was and what YOUR result was; mention any recognition you received (e.g., Sales Associate of the Quarter, $ Million Dollar Pin, whatever).
Unless you’re looking for an Admin position, your description of your computer learning is way over-emphasized.
Describe some dimensions of the fraternit treasurer position; mention some particular accomplishment(s).
Don’t assume the reader knows what your references mean (e.g., Awana) and mention specific things you did in thoese community outreach programs.

Your degree is contained in a section called Education – not overview

It might not hurt for you to state some sort of Objective at the front of the resume.

I am assuming you are relatively young, but there may be some real paydirt in that “family business.” Tell them what that business really was; give it some dimension; tout some special accomplishment(s), all done while you were still in School. And if you’re not as young as I suspect, the details of that period of your life (e.g., between high school and college, maybe) is even more important.

Resumes need to tell someone WHY they should consider you for their position, not just be a Promissory Note claiming “I’m a quick learner / hard worker / people person” with solid basic skills, ready to work hard for you. Blowing one’s own horn is a very hard thing to do, but it is essential in somehting like this.

Q&A: how will developing public speaking skills help you to be an effective employee?

effective public speaking
by Earthworm

Question by : how will developing public speaking skills help you to be an effective employee?

Best answer:

Answer by LA Boston Gal
Toastmasters, take a public speaking class at the community college, become the chairperson or president of one of the company diversity groups or employee development organizations, you can also take a storytelling class or start to speak up at meetings. People with this deficiency who want to get better need to talk to their manager and work on a personal development plan to target specific training, projects and activities to develop the skill, if so desired.

Does Public Speaking Scare You? Need help with the fear?

www.faststartpack.com www.top10speakingtips.com Have you ever said to yourself… “The thought of public speaking makes me queasy!” “I’d do anything to get out of doing that presentation!” “I’m afraid I’ll forget what to say and make a complete fool of myself!” Getting started on any presentation can be difficult, discouraging, and nerve-racking. Even if you get beyond the fear, questions like “How do I begin? Will they be bored? How do I end this with a bang?” swirl through your mind. And, it’s frustrating to have so many questions and nowhere to turn for answers.

Introduction

With the growing dependence on the World Wide Web, more and more individuals are welcoming the utilization of this recent technology to further advance the world of education. Distance learning and online education are becoming essential to the available course options offered by institutions of higher learning.

This paper examines the efficacy of this matter as a collection of genres. Specifically, I will draw on my own experience in two similar courses—one taught in a traditional face-to-face classroom, and the other taught online. The two courses, “Designing Brochures and Newsletters” and “Designing Instruction Manuals,” were both taught by the same instructor and used similar texts and resources. Essentially, the main differences between these courses were the media through which they were presented and the different instruction genres that were utilized.

The first section of this paper will give an explanation of the format of each of the classrooms as well as their similarities and differences. In the second section, I will examine how the different genres used affected course presentation and student success. Finally, I will illustrate how online learning can be most effective; specifically, I will examine my own experience and assess what tools instructors can use to promote increased student learning.

8. Which of the following sentences from the above passage includes a nominalization?

a. Distance learning and online education are becoming essential to the available course options offered by institutions of higher learning.
b. This paper examines the efficacy of online education as a collection of genres.
c. The two courses, “Designing Brochures and Newsletters” and “Designing Instruction Manuals” were both taught by the same instructor and used similar texts and resources.
d. The first section of this paper will give an explanation of the format of each of the classrooms, as well as their similarities and differences.

Okay, I’m NOT an English major by any stretch of the imagination, so I might get these wrong, but this is how I would answer them…

1.A – Because the subject (The book) is what is being acted upon (was written)
2.B – Because the subject (I) is performing the action (knocked)
3.B – Passive
4.C – ((but I’m not sure!))
5.B
6.A
7.B – ‘Drove’ tells how exactly John got to work.
8.D – ‘will give an explanation’ could more directly and concisely be ‘will explain’
9.I’m not quite sure, having not read the lesson, but would go with B
10. C
11. Again, having not read the lesson, but I would say ‘False’, as technical documents are best left concise.
12.A – Hispanic is more politically correct than ‘Mexican’
13.B – (depending on how you’ve been taught) ‘Officer’ is gender neutral, and therefore not PC

This appears to be a piece of class work that you have to do, am I right? If that’s the case, nobody will be doing you any favours by giving you the answers. You’re supposed to give the answers for yourself, for which purpose you have to study and understand the language principles involved. That’s what makes it educational, and that’s why you were set the test in the first place.

If you ask for the answers here, there’s a good chance that somebody will tell you all the wrong ones for a joke, and if you write them down and submit that to your teacher you’ll be stuffed. But even if you’re lucky and are told the right ones, you still won’t have learnt anything.

HAHAHAHAHA – you have to be joking – who on earth do you expect to read all this, and take a deal of time to answer your coursework questions for you?
2nd point – if we do this for you (and it is seriously easy, so no idea why you are even asking for help unless you are VERY LAZY) – if we do this for you, then you have learned NOTHING from it.
3rd point – what is in it for us? you are clearly unable to contribute anything positive to any question or debate, if you cannot figure out this stuff for yourself.
4th point – if you think you can go through life and just copy & paste other peoples work, then you are in for a very nasty shock. Plagiarism (look it up on dictionary.com) is very easy to detect, and is always punished with great enthusiasm.
