Saturday, February 11, 2012.Recap: No. 15 C’Town 87, No. 19 WC 69.By Brendan Hall..CHARLESTOWN, Mass. — At this time last year, Charlestown made the trek West, down Route 146, to deliver a haymaker to a Whitinsville Christian squad considered the state’s tallest lineup. ..This afternoon, the Crusaders came East to Bunker Hill, with a different look for the Townies — smaller, quicker, more surgical — and the result was very nearly a different outcome. The Crusaders hung with Charlestown through three quarters, before the Townies pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Whitinsville 31-14 in the final frame en route to an 87-69 victory. .."That team’s very good, I thought that was the best shooting team we saw," Charlestown head coach Edson Cardoso said. "They’re very well balanced, with a real good point guard, big man, two-guard, so I knew coming into this game it was going to be a battle. I told the guys, ‘You’re going to see a team like this in the state tournament, eventually down the line." ..The Townies (14-3), played just seven due to health (Jawhari Dawan-Abdullah, stomach bug) and off the court issues (Gary Braham, suspension). But they saw all five of their regular starters reach double-figures, with senior point guard Rony Fernandez (26 points, four assists) leading the way. Senior forward Tyrik Jackson (12 points, 13 rebounds) came up big on the glass again, while Tyrese Hoxter (16 points, seven assists), Omar Orriols (13 points) and Iser Barnes (12) contributed some big shots from the perimeter to keep the defense stretched out. ..But early on, the Crusaders (12-2) gave them fits with the methodical way they broke through the Townie’s 2-3 zone with some of the most disciplined and precise ball movement they’d seen in a while. Junior point guard Colin Richey (23 points) funneled the offense down to the baseline, finding a player planted right in the heart of the zone and kicking to either the baseline or either wing. ..Whitinsville shot nearly 40 percent from the field, getting good looks from the short side from Tyler VandenAkker (12 points, eight rebounds) and Jesse Dykstra. Grant Brown (10 points) came up with some big shots from the perimeter as well. .."We decided to extend a little bit more on the short corner, because they hit about four shots in a row from the short corner," Cardoso said. "We also decided to have the opposite guard extend even more on shooter No. 2 (Tim Dufficey). So we made some extensions in the second half, did a little better job — not a great job, but it helped us get the victory." ..To start the fourth quarter, Barnes completed a 6-0 run by ripping the ball out of his defender’s hands at midcourt and landing a breakaway layup. A few possessions later, Hoxter found Jackson underneath the rim for an easy tip-in and 68-59 advantage. ..Then with 1:37 to go, sophomore Taris Wilson hit the first of two monster breakaway slams, this one making it 76-63 to essentially put the game in hand. ..Hot from the field: The Townies outrebounded the Crusaders 16-7 in the final frame, giving way to many key transition points that helped ice the lead and the win. I’ve recently joined Toastmasters. It’s giving me a chance to improve my public speaking as well as my listening skills. As part of being a Toastmaster member, I receive the monthly Toastmaster magazine.

Well what do you know? This month they have an article on Route 66 speak. Talk about hitting home. I live in the Midwest in an area where Rt 66 ran through. The language is dieing out. How cool they’d take time to recognize it.

Question by Shelly B: Can someone give me tips about public speaking?
I have a solo presentation next week for my Advanced General Psychology class, which needs to be at least an hour long. I will be presenting with a Powerpoint presentation, so I will have some guidance. I have a problem with giving any kind of presentations/speeches in front of people, which is not uncommon, I know. I tend to absolutely panic while up there though.

I constantly feel as if I’m going to pass out due to fast heartbeats and shallow breathing. Does anyone have any tips to help me overcome this horrible thing?

Every time I present in front of my class, I get really nervous and start to turn all sweaty. Also, my voice starts to sort of shake or change. I can’t speak properly too. I am always scared that I will embarrass myself. The good thing is that I still have time to practice, but I need some tips.

Just stay calm, speak normally as if you were speaking with one of your best friends, and just talk in a level, were you feel comfortable, as well as your classmates. Use a lot of hand gestures and stuff, and if you still feel nervous, you can always look towards the back of the room, which is what I usually do, try to make a lot of eye contact, just stay calm.

I have to read at an awards evening and when i have to read i stutter and don’t seem to be able to do it properly. I don’t want people to be whispering about how bad i am. any tips please?

Memorize the text, so that when you’re reading it on stage, the text will be entirely familiar and you wont be as nervous. It’s the nerves that are causing you to stutter. Just know your text well. Your brain will know what comes next as you read it in front of the audience and you wont stumble.

Spouses learn coping skills at first Resilient Spouse Academy

FORT RILEY, Kan. – More than 20 spouses spent four days in an intensive resilience training program that gave them the tools and coaching needed to help Soldiers and Families handle the effects of deployments.

The Resilient Spouse Academy, which was open to all spouses, taught participants how to handle finances, domestic violence and someone considering suicide, through a variety of videos, guest speakers, breakout groups and role playing sessions.

"It’s the reality of the fight that we are currently in," said Col. Kevin Brown, Fort Riley garrison commander, explaining that resilience training is needed to help watch out for signs of Soldiers in stress.

Patricia Verschage, an academy attendee said, "One of the reasons why we do this is our Soldiers come home from their battle and our spouses are the ones that have the first eyes on them. This is to help us help them."

Brig. Gen. David Petersen, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley deputy commanding general – rear, said he needed spouses to be "sensors for the Army."

"In this Army, transition is more the norm than the exception. The challenge will be, as we identify more folks that have potential issues, we need to do the right thing – put our arms around those Soldiers and keep our promise and make sure that we’re taking care of them," he said.

Darla Griffith, a guest speaker, spoke to the spouses about a time she used her Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training to identify a Soldier in need of help and used training to assist him.

"We aren’t experts; it just gives you a sensitivity as to where someone might be at and when you are put in a situation to do a suicide intervention, that workshop information is invaluable," Griffith said.

Cherie Cain, mobilization and personal readiness branch manager for Army Community Service, said she hopes to see this class offered on a regular basis.

"To our knowledge this is the first one (Resilient Spouse Academy) that’s ever been done. We incorporate the ASIST training, financial readiness, master resilience training, substance abuse and domestic violence. A little bit of everything that Families deal with on a day-to-day basis to give them some tools to guide them in the right direction," she said.

"Resiliency starts at home and in a networked community that cares. We want to make sure that the Resilient Spouse Academy is that place that it starts at. It’s the place that networks that really gets out there. It’s the sensors and that reaching out and touching somebody else to make it a bigger community that we’re all big one Family to help each other out," Cain said.

Dee Thurman, wife of Gen. James D. Thurman, commander U.S. Army Forces Command in Fort McPherson, Ga., visited the spouses at the academy during their breakout sessions on Wednesday.

"This is exactly what we need across the board, she said, adding it would be a hit at Fort Hood where spouses experience back-to-back deployments.

She has to hold back tears when she sees military spouses struggling, Thurman said.

"I know they’re having a tough time and shame on us for not being there sooner," she said.

The academy has three more sessions scheduled for spouses. Session dates are Aug. 23-27, Sept. 13-17 and Oct. 18-22.
